Not sure what to work on?
Keep in mind that you don’t need a “diagnosis” or a “symptom” to go to therapy. Folks go to therapy for all sorts of reasons including wanting to get more from their lives.
Indeed, when I first went to therapy (as a young 20-something), all I knew was that I couldn’t function as well as I could. Not having any particular symptoms that I could describe kept me from seeking the help I so badly needed for years.
In my view – speaking as an experienced psychotherapist – there’s too many people suffering needlessly. They don’t realize that so many of the problems they face are actually rooted in emotional issues that can be resolved. They believe their problems result from a character flaw, and can change only by “toughing it out” or “pushing through it”.
On the other hand, good therapy gets you to a place where change happens naturally – you just step into a new you when the work is done. And it happens without the “just do it” attitude.
For this reason, I emphasize seeing a therapist just when the idea prompts you. You just never know how your life can be transformed!
